Community Education Group, Inc. (CEG) is a 501©3 not-for-profit agency dedicated to social change focusing on the creation and expansion of programs and projects which address the health, social-economic, environmental, and systematic challenges facing the African American family. We are dedicated to helping communities hardest hit by HIV/AIDS and other health disparities, and the community-based organizations that serve them. Our motto, “Building stronger communities, one project at a time”, illustrates our mission and commitment to capacity building.

CEG works with a diverse constituency of organizations focused on eliminating health and economic disparities, with an emphasis on HIV-related programs. CEG's mission is founded in a model of self-empowerment. When agencies working in HIV and AIDS areas are trained to be self-sufficient, we can then begin to end disparities reflected in other areas of the community. Individuals and agencies that have been traditionally under-served by the medical and social service fields are provided the tools to identify their own needs, devise solutions to their problems, and implement effective measures to create change.

CEG's focus is on developing programs and plans which can be replicated elsewhere. CEG has developed innovative educational programs to serve communities hardest hit by HIV/AID. CEG assists communities of color in overcoming cultural and systemic barriers to accessing critical HIV/AIDS information, and have facilitated community-directed processes aimed at building bridges to health, planning/policy, and funding processes.

CEG employs practical approaches in its efforts to decrease morbidity and mortality in target populations and to end the disparities so often felt by women of color and the agencies that serve them.

Covenant House Washington is the local affiliate of Covenant House, an international organization that is committed to protecting and safeguarding homeless and at-risk youth. CHW annually serves over 800 youth (between the ages 16-21) and their children (infants and toddlers) who are homeless, runaways, and/or throwaways. CHW’s current programs and services include: The Nineline (1-800-999-9999); The Mobile Outreach Support Team (MOST); Residential Services; Nancy Dickerson Whitehead Community Service Center (CSC); Education & Training Program; Artisans Woodworking Program; Legal Services and Advocacy; and Prevention Services.

CHW’s Prevention Services unit targets youth between the ages of 11-17. Prevention Services houses two highly effective teen pregnancy prevention programs and a substance abuse prevention program. CHW’s Prevention Services’ Programs are designed to meet the individual needs of youth (male and female) between the ages of 11-17 living east of the Anacostia River in Washington DC who are at high risk for teen pregnancy, substance abuse, violence and other problem behaviors. These three programs address problem prevention with a youth development approach that equips young people to develop healthy self-esteem and a sense of future by reducing teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and ultimately increasing youth decision-making skills. We serve youth and families through a curriculum based youth leadership development training program, recreational and cultural enrichment activities, homework tutorial services, community service projects, and monthly Parents En-Power workshops and meetings at its Centers for Teen Pregnancy Prevention. In addition, the programs serve approximately 500 youth through its bi-annual Health & Prevention Fair by partnering with and hosting community based organizations & health service providers and receiving multiple awards and honors in the process.
